How Do Oils and Fats Work in Our Body?

There are several benefits of fats, such as keeping the metabolism strong, having your body work properly and making you fuller longer. It tastes great as well. It is important that we keep bad fats like fried or baked foods at bay. Healthy fats such as oily fish, or those in avocados are fantastic at filling in those fat needs and fueling the body.

What would happen if you gave up on fats and oils for a week? Here is a list of affects it would have on your body:

1.    Hormone Fluctuations

Having a low or no amount of fat in your diet can disrupt your testosterone or estrogen levels. It can have negative effects in the bone health and menstrual cycle of women. Estrogen helps in the absorption of calcium hence supporting the bone health and protecting them from osteoporosis. They can cause a decrease of growth in size and strength of muscles in men as they cause a deficiency of testosterone.

2.    Abundance of Triglycerides

By cutting off your fats, your body will experience a rise of triglyceride levels. When there is a lack of fat, the liver turns sugar into fat to cover up for the deficiency. This can lead to heart attack, stroke, heart disease, and diabetes.

There are many side effects that you can come across if you cut off fats for even just a week. To avoid any problems, it is best to consult a doctor or a nutritionist first.

3.    Deficiency of Essential Fatty Acids

There are fats that our body requires but cannot produce on its own, these fats are called essential fatty acids. These fats are used by your body to produce hormones, which are purposed to take out various actions such as immune function, kidney, gastrointestinal function, and blood pressure. One of the leading causes of preventable deaths is the lack of Omega-3 fatty acids, which are a part of essential fatty acids.

4.    Deceleration in Metabolic Performance

If you are trying to lose weight by cutting out all kinds of fats, you might want to reconsider it. While cutting out bad fats is a good thing, the good fats are essential to your body to burn down brown fats. Hence if you remove good fats from your diet, it would lead to a drop in your metabolic activity, making it harder to lose weight.

5.    Rise in Blood Sugar Levels

To have a stable amount of sugars in your blood, you need to have a balance between carbs and fats. If your diet consists mainly of carbs and no fat, your blood sugar will increase. This leads to a potential risk of diabetes, and a bad metabolism. A healthy fat is essential in each meal to keep your levels stable.

Getting Enough Healthy Fats

Your body should get its 20-35% of daily calories through fats. A single gram of fat contains 9 calories. Therefore, you are going to need 44-47 g of fat a day to cover your calorie intake if the quota is 2000 calories.

Choose polyunsaturated or monosaturated fats, when you are looking for your fat source. These may come in the form of avocados, vegetable oils, seeds and nuts. Try avoiding trans fats found in processed foods like commercial baked goods or margarine. Choose healthier diets that suggest a balanced amount of nutrients if you are trying to lose weight.
